Michaelhouse vs Westville results, reports, YT highlights, 2 Nov

4 November 2024

During the week, Westville Boys’ High scraped past Kearsney by one run in a Schools SA20 clash, but they enjoyed a more comfortable victory at Michaelhouse on Saturday, scoring a comfortable 82-run win on the Roy Gathorne Oval.

Captain Nicandro Kistna‘s decision to bat first didn’t pan out that well, at first, but Seth Simpson soon turned the tide in the Griffins‘ favour after they were reduced to 28/2 in the seventh over. He played a patient and well-judged knock, accumulating 68 runs from 97 balls, which included a six and eight fours.

He and Sean McGough shared a stand of 78 from 98 balls for the fourth wicket, with McGough weighing in with 38 from 53 deliveries. The next five batsmen – Kyle McGough, Roxton Payne, Tristin Delvin, Sekou Shangase, and Dayalan Boyce – all made it into the teens. Individually, theirs were not big contributions, but cumulatively that made a difference as Westville batted all the way through their 50 overs, losing their last wicket on the last ball, with the total on 231.

The Roy Gathorne Oval is not a particularly high-scoring venue, so that was a solid score from the visitors.

Ethan Muir was the pick of the ‘House bowlers, knocking over 4/38 in 10 overs while doing a good job of disrupting the Westville middle-order. Ross Moller was, as always, difficult to get away, and he took 2/37 in 10. Radhesh Jhilmeet also bagged two sticks, conceding 31 runs from his five overs.

Michaelhouse’s reply was uneven. Two batsmen, Seb Hofmeyr and Jean-Luc Rey, batted well and convincingly handled the Westville bowlers. Unfortunately for the home team, the remainder of their batsmen failed to fire, with the last man in, Thandanani Zuma, the best of them with eight not out. That, simply put, didn’t cut.

Hofmeyr excelled with 64 from 81 balls, striking a six and eight fours. Such was his dominance in comparison to the other Michaelhouse batsmen that when he was out, the seventh wicket to go down, ‘House had reached only 97 in the 26th over.

Rey, though, picked up where Hofmeyr left off , making 36 from 50, with four fours, but he was the last man to go, caught off the bowling of Kistna, with the Michaelhouse total on 149.

The Westville skipper inflicted serious damage on the home side’s batting, snapping up 3/19 in 5.3 overs, while Roxton Payne’s left-arm spin brought him a tidy return of 3/27 from 10. Fast bowler Dayalan Boyce picked up 1/18 in seven.

WATER POLO

While Westville might not have enjoyed the results of the water polo matches, with Michaelhouse scoring four wins to the Griffins’ two, including an 8-6 victory in the 1st team game, those results reflected two important points:

The first was the improvement that Michaelhouse’s water polo teams have shown this year. The second was that this improvement has also been evident in other KZN schools in 2024, which is good news for the province. Kearsney’s recent title success in the St Stithians Invitational Water Polo Tournament was further evidence that the game in KZN is in good health.
