Following an impressive victory over Glenwood last weekend, Clifton College achieved another eye-catching result at the Riverside Sports Club on Saturday, romping to a 107-run win over Northwood.

Batting first, an impressive effort by opener Byron Ward, along with small contributions here and there from a number of other batsmen, helped the home side post 204 all out. They didn’t last their full complement of 50 overs, staying out in the middle for only 43.3 overs, but, in the end, that proved to be more than enough.

Ward was the cornerstone around which Clifton built their innings. His 75 was far and away the highest score of a low-scoring contest. It came from 106 balls and included five sixes and two fours. Wicketkeeper Lawson Dinsdale, coming in ninth, delivered an important 23 not out, while all-rounder Tim Saulez continued his fine season with a contribution of 21.

David de Bruyn was the most successful of the Knights’ bowlers, snapping up 4/49 in his 10 after being the seventh bowler introduced into the attack. He received good support from Kyle White, who kept it tidy to claim 2/24 in 10, while Mason Storm enjoyed success, too, taking claiming 2/21 in six.

Chasing 205 on the Riverside Sports Club wicket can be a tricky challenge and it become a very difficult one very early in Northwood’s reply when they lost three wickets in quick succession to stumble to 15/3.

Opener David de Bruyn and Dolphins’ u18 batsman Mfana Shange added 23 runs before Shange was dismissed, caught off Blake Johnson for seven. Then, when De Bruyn was caught for 23 from 44, off Clifton captain Shahzaad Perumal, Northwood had lost half their wickets for only 54 runs.

Kyle White and Ross McGlashan improved the total to 70, but when White was LBW to Johnson for 13, another two wickets fell soon after that, leaving the Knights in desperate trouble on 79/8.

Ben Cilliers and McGlashan battled their way to 97, but they were both sent packing on that total, which brought the contest to an end. Shahzaad Perumal trapped Cilliers in front for 13, while Shiraz Perumal accounted for McGlashan, also by way of LBW, for Northwood’s second highest score of 20.

Shiraz Perumal returned the best figures for Clifton, capturing 3/23 from 9.3 overs, while Shahzaad Perumal offered up few run scoring opportunities as he claimed 2/11 in seven.

Tim Saulez set Clifton on their way, removing two of the first three top-order batsmen to depart, while Blake Johnson , with 2/29 in six played his part. Callum Watson, the only other bowler employed by Clifton, claimed 1/22.

It was little wonder, after his side’s big win, that coach Brandon Scullard declared himself happy with the way they’re playing. Much like another team that has been stacking up victories, DHS, Clifton returns the majority of their lineup in 2025. They’ll be one to watch.
