The Durban High School (DHS) 1st XI has gone from strength to strength in 2024 and they continued their upward trajectory on Saturday on the Roy Gathorne Oval in Balgowan, romping to an emphatic seven-wicket win over Michaelhouse.
The toss went ‘House’s way, but not too much else did. They chose to bat first, but struggled against a disciplined bowling effort from School.
Ethan Muir top scored for the home side with 35 but his fourth wicket partnership of 32 with Murray Hall-Jones, who made 21, was the best that Michaelhouse could muster.
Taine Havemann did the damage up front, sending the top three in the Michaelhouse batting order packing. He picked up 3/32 in 10 overs, while Dhilan Naraidu, who shared the new ball with Havemann, ramped up the pressure with his return of 1/18 from 10.
DHS brought on their SA u19 Emerging fast bowler Bayanda Majola late in the Michaelhouse innings. He was the seventh bowler employed by captain Semal Pillay and he did his job well, capturing 2/16 in five, as ‘House clawed their way to 164/9 from their 50 overs.
While Michaelhouse struck twice early on in the DHS reply, they ran into trouble when Josh van Biljon joined Semal Pillay at the crease. They combined for a 109-run partnership from 118 balls to guide the Horseflies to victory with 17.5 overs to spare.
Van Biljon made 55 from 68 balls, with nine fours, while Pillay was unbeaten at the conclusion of the contest, having scored 52 from 71 deliveries, with four fours.
Ross Moller was the pick of the Michaelhouse bowlers, claiming 2/18 in eight overs.

While their 1st XI went down, the other Michaelhouse open age group teams recorded comfortable wins. It was all square at u15 and u14 level.

BASKETBALL
The basketball results between Michaelhouse and DHS were interesting. ‘House grabbed the 1st team win when many would have tipped DHS to come out on top. The Balgowan boys also won the other two open age group matches.
DHS won the three u16 games, ‘House won all five u15 matches, and School was victorious in the four u14 games.

WATER POLO
In the absence of the schools’ leading teams, Michaelhouse enjoyed the better of their matches against DHS in the pool. However, the DHS 1st team edged out ‘House in a penalty shootout at the KZN Top 10 Tournament. In the u15 competition, DHS won 4-0, but Michaelhouse won the u14 clash 8-3.
DHS scored the biggest upset of the event, beating Clifton 7-4 in their 1st team game, which resulted in Clifton missing out on the semi-finals.
