Playing at home on Saturday, the St Charles College 1st XI enjoyed a strong showing against their Pietermaritzburg rivals, Maritzburg College, putting up a challenging total on the big St Charles Oval before restricting College’s reply, pretty much, to an outstanding, but ultimately fruitless, solo effort from captain Chad Mason.
There was consistency throughout the Saints’ batting effort, with three batsmen weighing in with half-centuries. At the top of the order, Cian Fortmann struck seven fours in his 53 from 62 deliveries. Zimbabwean international Brendon Sunguro continued his superb all-round season with 54 from 64, while Thando Zama top scored with 60, which included six fours.
Connor Riley added a useful 32 and Rico Honiball made 20 as St Charles tallied 273/6. Ryan McKean claimed 2/42 from eight overs for College, while Daniel Nadasan bowled tightly to pick up 1/26 in eight.
College’s reply was a stop/start affair as Saints made regular inroads. Only Chad Mason made it beyond the teens in a lone, stubborn innings. He added another milestone to a superb season, contributing 102 from 115 balls, with 12 fours and a six. Less 19 extras, the other 10 batsman produced only 68 runs.
Sungoro was the destroyer-in-chief, knocking over 4/17 in six, while Connor Vogt captured 3/30 from eight as Saints cruised to a big 84-run win.
St Charles College 273/6 (T. Zama 60, B. Sunguro 54, C. Fortmann 53, C, Riley 32, R. McKean 2/42); Maritzburg College 189/10 (C. Mason 102, B. Sunguro 4/17, C. Vogt 3/30)
St Charles won by 84 runs
The Red, Black and White had the better of the other open age group matches, and they claimed the u15A victory, but the outstanding St Charles u14A team continued on their winning ways in emphatic fashion.

BASKETBALL
In the battle of the first teams, College rocketed out of the blocks, roaring into a 27-11 lead after the first quarter by playing a high-pressure game. That proved to be a winning formula as Saints was unable to find an answer to College’s tight pressing and effective counter-attacking.
It ended with a big 36-point victory for the Red, Black and White, 81-45. They enjoyed a spectacular day, winning 17 of their 18 games against Saints, while also recording u16F and u14 F wins over Michaelhouse, with ‘House winning the u15F game.
