CRICKET
Glenwood elected to bat in the 1st XI showdown at Riverside on Saturday and they put up 217 all out, being dismissed in the 49th over of their 50. The Green Machine will look back on that batting effort and think they made enough starts, but there was insufficient follow-through.
They had five players score 20 or more, but opener Karabo Ntsieng‘s 36 was their best, and they could have done with something substantial.
Credit must go to Clifton’s bowlers, though, with all six of them taking wickets. New ball bowler Callum Watson set the tone, claiming 3/46, while captain Shahzaad Perumal snapped up 2/33 with his left-arm spin, and Gabriel Vermeulen picked up 2/38.
Support for Ntsieng came from Ntando Soni (feature photo), who made a useful 31, coming in seventh in the order, Krian Jugoo made 27, and Sibonelo Phewa, batting at nine, weighed in with 23.
Glenwood bowled well early in Clifton’s innings and they had the home side on the ropes on 27/3, which made the 218 they required for victory appear a long way off.
However, a captain’s innings from Shahzaad Perumal and strong support from Zach Williamson and Lawson Dinsdale took the young Clifton side – with only two matric boys in its ranks – to a six-wicket win in the second last over.
Perumal struck an unbeaten 102, while Williamson lent valuable support with 59. Dinsdale, then, contributed 31 not out to see Clifton across the line.
SA u19 Emerging paceman Soni was the pick of the Glenwood bowlers, taking 2/34.
Glenwood 217/10 (Karabo Ntsieng 37, Ntando Soni 31, Krian Jugoo 27, Sibonelo Phewa 23, Callum Watson 3/46, Shahzaad Perumal 2/33, Gabriel Vermeulen 2/38); Clifton College 218/4 (Shahzaad Perumal 102*, Zach Williamson 59, Lawson Dinsdale 31*, Ntando Soni 2/34)
Clifton won by six wickets.
Clifton scored a tight victory in the 2nd XI match, but Glenwood took wins in the u15A and u14A games.

BASKETBALL
While their water polo teams were in action in the KZN Top 10, Glenwood and Clifton did battle on the Riverside Sports Club basketball courts and cricket fields.
In the main basketball game, the Clifton first team got off to a flyer to stamp their authority on their clash with Glenwood from the start. In the first half, especially, they moved the ball well and shot it well, too, to open up a big 31-11 lead at the break.
From there, they effectively managed the contest, even though Glenwood showed good fight to make it 22-19 to Clifton in the second half.
The hosts won the 1st, u16A and u15A games, but Glenwood took the u14A honours. They also showed off good depth in the age groups.

WATER POLO
The Clifton 1st team, the best of the KZN sides at the Clifton Water Polo Tournament, was a little loose and not at their best at the KZN Top 10 Water Polo Tournament, played at Westville Boys’ High, finishing fifth, which was a pity for the Durban powerhouse because their u15 and u14 teams turned on the style to capture their age group titles.
Both of the age group teams, convincingly defeated sides that had narrowly beaten them in the pool stage of the competition to be crowned champions.
In front of strong support, the u15 side downed Hilton College 9-5, while the u14s raced into an astonishing 7-0 lead, on their way to a 13-5 win over Kearsney in the title-decider.
Glenwood, meanwhile, placed ninth at 1st team level, 8th in the u15 competition, and 8th in the u14 event. They finished ninth in the overall standings.
Clifton shared second, alongside Hilton College, and just one point behind the overall winners, Kearsney College.
