The Riverside Sports Club, the home of Clifton Sport, was the venue for the Clifton Sevens, the opening sevens tournament of the season, on Friday and Saturday. On the field of play, Westville Boys’ High shone.
They had four teams in action – u15A and B sides, their u17A team, and their u18B side – and in 20 matches they won 19 and drew one.
Twelve points separated the teams in their closest u15A match, which was a 26-14 victory over Hilton College. Michaelhouse B managed to come within five of Westville B, but the Griffin claimed a 17-12 win.
Their u17A team, which was filled with exciting, skilful ball players – with Zekhethelo Siyaya and Jade-Will Koopman to the fore – was surprisingly held to a 17-17 draw by Michaelhouse in pool play. However, when those same teams met again in the Cup final, it was Westville who ran out 19-5 winners.
The Westville u18B side was dominant. They beat Michaelhouse 26-7 in the Bowl Final, which was the closest any team got to them on the day.
‘House, though, showed up strongly. Their depth shone as their C team finished in third place, with their key result, a 22-17 win, coming against Hilton B.
St Charles fielded a team that excluded their matric boys because the Saints’ Matric Dance took place on Saturday evening. In their stead, a young side showed off some exciting skills and claimed the Plate.
When the St Charles matrics return to action in two weeks’ time, at the Saints Sevens, the hosts will be one of the teams to beat.
Victory in the Shield went the way of Michaelhouse.
The hosts, Clifton, enjoyed themselves, pulling off a win over St Charles and, in arguably the big upset of the event, they convincingly defeated Michaelhouse 29-5.
