Michaelhouse will serve as host of the North u16 and u18 Regional Hockey Tournaments from 30 June to 4 July. The school always provides a picturesque and inviting backdrop to events and this time it will be for 21 teams and 336 players.
In a welcome message from the KZN Inland Boys’ Hockey Chair, Grant von Mayer, he said: “This sport is not just a competition; it is a celebration of sport, camaraderie, and the pursuit of excellence. As we gather here, we are reminded of the profound words of Nelson Mandela: “Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does.”
Tournament Structure
The u18 competition features two pools of five teams, while the u16 event features six sides in Pool X and five in Pool Y.
In the u18 competition, in Pool A, KZN Coastal C faces North West B, Southern Gauteng Blue, Eastern Gauteng B and Mpumalanga C, while in Pool B, it’s Southern Gauteng Yellow, KZN Inland C, Limpopo B, Mpumalanga B and Northern Free State B.
Pool X, in the u16 competition, includes KZN Coastal C, North West B, Southern Gauteng Blue, Eastern Gauteng B, Northern Free State C and Mpumalanga C. The Pool Y participants are Southern Gauteng Yellow, KZN Inland C, Mpumalanga B and Northern Free State B.
Make no mistake, while there are no provincial A sides, there is some serious talent within the ranks of the participating teams.
With two events running concurrently, the programme is jam-packed. The Punchbowl Astro will host most of the u18 matches, while Aitkens Astro looks after the majority of the u16 games.
