In an absolute ripper of a game, Maritzburg College went 0-3 down to Hilton College in the early going on Goldstone’s on Saturday. Then, they opened up a 14-3 lead, only to fall 14-20 behind, before a late surge took the Red, Black and White to a stirring 26-20 victory. It was a tough battle.
Lee-Rynne Sinkfontein flummoxed Hilton with a sweet dummy and step to score, Rambo Kubheka powered his way over, Siya Nyathi crossed in the left-hand corner, and Ntsika Mkhize rounded off the scoring in the opposite corner, with both tries out wide coming from super passes from the College captain, Kubheka.
Xander Vorster sniped superbly to bag a brace for Hilton, while Ivan Jjuuko dotted down after a wonderful flat pass from flyhalf Xola Bakana put Khazimla Makali into a gap. After drawing the last defender, he sent Jjuuko on his way for five.
James Slevin converted three of the four tries for College, including a high pressure conversion from the touchline, in front of Basher Ridge, which put College 21-20 ahead, while Bakana popped over a conversion and added a penalty.
It was an exceptionally good day for Maritzburg College, who swept the boards on the rugby field. There were plenty of tight games, but the home teams found a winning recipe time after time. Hilton’s u14A team came closest to stopping College, going down by four points.

HOCKEY
On Pape’s Astro, the Maritzburg College and Hilton 1st XIs played to a 1-1 draw.
The game opened up after half-time, with the home team doing most of the pressing. Hilton, however, struck first, with a lovely, sweeping counterattack giving them the lead. College found a reply almost immediately.
The u16A and u14A matches also ended in draws.
College held the advantage in the open age group, winning two games, while three were drawn. Hilton, though, won two u16 matches and College won two.
There were two draws at u14 level, with College’s u14C team, beaten only once all season, by Westville, recording the biggest win of the day.
