And then there were two… Only two unbeaten sides remained after the second day of the Nomads Hockey Festival at Maritzburg College, both of them from the Eastern Cape.
In a clash of two of the opening day’s unbeaten teams, Grey High edged out Hilton College 1-0 on Friday. Later, they ran roughshod over King Edward VII School (KES), roaring their way to a 6-0 victory, to remain on course for a record of five wins from five matches for a second tournament in succession.
Hilton improved their record to three from four with a 2-1 victory against Pretoria Boys High.
Selborne College are in line to match their Eastern Cape rivals after they and Grey High went five for five at the Tony Godding Festival last weekend.
Selborne claimed a 1-0 win over Jeppe, to drop the Johannesburg school to 0 and 3 in this year’s event, and then accounted for Maritzburg College 2-0.
Later, Jeppe finally got on track with an entertaining 4-3 win over Wynberg Boys’ High, while College had earlier defeated St John’s College 2-1. St John’s, though, claimed a big scalp, ending Grey College‘s run of wins at Nomads by a 2-1 margin.
The festival wraps up with a 12:15 showdown on Saturday between Maritzburg College and Jeppe, the two leading producers of South African Schools’ players. A traditional rivalry between hockey blue bloods, it should be a cracker.
