Day one of the Glenwood Rugby Festival produced some big upsets, while the Clifton College u14A side put up its hand as a team to watch and DHS brushed aside their opposition.
Clifton, beaten 14-12 by Maritzburg College on the weekend, showed they’re a team to be reckoned with by beating Westville Boys’ High by that same score on Tuesday. Then, on Friday, up against Volkskool Heidelberg at Glenwood, they let loose, running away to a 41-0 victory.
Last year, Clifton’s Prep 1st XV was a juggernaut, winning 16 of 17 matches, while averaging 40 points and conceding only six per game. Now, that talent is showing up in the u14 ranks.
The DHS u14A team, meanwhile, earned a hard-fought 29-19 win over Kearsney on the weekend. They had it a lot easier against Potchefstroom Volkskool on Friday, cruising to a 62-0 victory.
The hosts, also, were too much for their opposition, overwhelming Bloemfontein’s Jim Fouché 44-0.
Westville won convincingly by 33 points against Trinity House, but Northwood were stunned by Wesvalia after a tight tussle.
They had no such issues with Wesvalia in the u15 age group, winning 47-0, while DHS were 56-5 winners against Potchefstroom Volkskool.
Westville Boys’ High withstood a stiff challenge from Centurion, recording a 26-7 win, but their B side was easily beaten by Volkskool Heidelberg, who won 48-8.
Jim Fouché pulled off an upset, edging out Glenwood 22-21.
The Westville Boys’ High 2nd XV, who won 19-10 against a very good Michaelhouse 2nd team on Saturday, added another victory, this time outplaying Potchefstroom Volkskool 45-5.
