Hilton College enjoyed a strong opening day at the Nomads u18 Tournament, played mostly in the rain at Maritzburg College on Thursday.
Coach Damian Kimfley‘s charges opened with a 2-0 win over Jeppe on Pape’s Astro, which reversed their 0-2 result against the Johannesburg boys, when they met in their last Nomads’ game in 2023.
Later, Hilton overran KES, who endured a difficult first day, 4-0.
The hosts, Maritzburg College, withstood early pressure from Grey High and then twice caught them out on the counter to take a 2-0 lead.
The Gqeberha school is made of stern stuff, however, and they entered the event on a high after winning all five of their matches at the Tony Godding Festival last weekend. Digging deep, they pulled level before finding a late winner, taking the honours 3-2.
College later faced Wynberg Boys’ High, who had outplayed St John’s College 4-0 in their first outing. That puts into context how good a win it was when College triumphed 1-0. Coach Kyle Emerson‘s team appears to be making positive early season progress.
Selborne College, another of the unbeaten teams from the Tony Godding Festival, kept their winning run going with 5-2 win over KES, followed by a hard-fought 1-0 success against Pretoria Boys High (PBHS).
Grey College, too, beaten only once this season so far, recorded a 2-1 win over PBHS and held on for a 1-0 victory over Jeppe.
