The Michaelhouse Hockey and Rugby Festival, which roars into action on Friday, is set to bring to life the hockey and rugby fields of the Midlands school, with the hockey competition featuring 1st and 2nd teams (and also Grey College‘s 3rd XI), and the rugby festival catering for u15A teams.
The u19 hockey event includes the 2nd teams of established, strong hockey-playing schools – among them Grey College, Bishops Diocesan College, Maritzburg College and Michaelhouse – and the 1st teams of schools that are on the rise.
In the case of Bloemfontein’s Hoërskool Jim Fouché, both their 1st and 2nd sides will be in action. Other 1st XIs include Midstream College, Falcon College (Zimbabwe), Ashton College, Hoërskool Linden, and Hoër Volkskool Potchefstroom.
Matches will be played on the Punchbowl and Aitken Astros.
Running alongside the hockey festival, the u15A rugby festival features 16 teams, who will play three matches each, on Meadows and Far Meadows.
The KZN teams include Clifton College, St Charles College, Kearsney College and Michaelhouse.
St Benedict’s College, St John’s College, Cornwall Hill College, St David’s Marist Inanda, St Alban’s College, Midstream College and St Stithians College hail from Gauteng, while the Eastern Cape representatives are St Andrew’s College and Woodridge College.
St Andrew’s School travels from Bloemfontein and Uplands College makes the trip from White River, Mpumalanga, but Falcon College has the longest journey, from Esigodini, in Zimbabwe.
One of the highlights will be the traditional Michaelhouse vs St Andrew’s College clash, which takes place at 16:00 on Saturday.
The focus of the event, more than the results, is about creating opportunities for schools and sides that have not previously had an annual festival in which to participate.
Hockey, especially, has seen huge growth over the last 30 years among schools that didn’t play it before then. They, therefore, have, for the most part, not been included in traditional festivals. Now, though, they’re able to enjoy festival hockey and to reap the benefits that tournament-type play brings to players and teams.
