In their opening match of 2024, the Maritzburg College 1st XV failed to fire in a disappointing loss to Kearsney College, which stung. That was unfortunate for Clifton College as captain Phiwayinkosi “Rambo” Kubheka (in feature photo, by Justin Waldman Sports Photography) and his troops brought their A-game to Goldstone’s on Saturday, determined to make right what had previously gone wrong.
SA Schools’ fullback Luyanda Kunene spearheaded the College attack, ripping through Clifton’s defences for five tries as College went over for 12 in total. James Slevin, who also scored a try, had his kicking boots on and added 10 conversions and a penalty for a personal haul of 28 points.
College powered their way to an 83-10 victory, but Clifton, to their credit, crossed the College try line twice, which included scoring the last try of the game.
The home side dominated, except in the under-14 age group where they escaped with a narrow 14-12 victory in the u14A game. Clifton’s u14 age group includes a nucleus of talented sportsmen and they will surely make more noise this season.

HOCKEY
The first schools’ match to be played under lights on Pape’s Astro on Friday night started slowly but developed into a fascinating contest. The Friday NITE Lights concept was certainly a winning one, and a draw between the two 1st XIs was a fair result.
Most of the rest of the results went College’s way, with their u16A side catching the eye with their excellent ball movement.
In the u14A game, the home team went 2-0 up, but Clifton fought their way back impressively to secure a 2-2 draw.
