The Michaelhouse 1st XI made the drive down to Durban on Saturday for a 50-over match against Glenwood. The most unpredictable of teams, the Green Machine were on song on Dixon’s, with a good performance in the field and an excellent batting performance from a debutant setting them up for a convincing four-wicket victory.
Glenwood captain Ntando Soni chose to bowl first, but it wasn’t the SA Schools’ opening bowler who claimed the first wicket. Rather, in a big blow for ‘House, Michael Spencer was run out without facing a ball.
Soni then struck to get rid of Michaelhouse opener Ethan Muir for 18, and three runs later Sibonelo Phewa had Dylan Hewlett caught by Soni, which left the visitors wobbling on 25/3. Luckily for them, they had an in-form Seb Hofmeyr in next.
He and Hayden Hewlett held up the Glenwood bowlers for 10 overs, but Hewlett was then out for 16, a victim of Daniel Gunawardena, who enjoyed an excellent day in the field. He picked up two wickets, took a catch, and effected a run out.
There were, in fact, three run outs as Glenwood’s fielders did fantastic work in support of their bowlers.
Hofmeyr, though, stood firm. He compiled an unbeaten 57 from 107 balls, striking five fours, but no one else bettered Ethan Muir’s 18 up front.
After 48 overs, Michaelhouse were all out for 133. Gunawardena snared 2/18 in eight, Soni knocked over 2/30 in 10, and Bandile Mbatha kept ‘House contained, claiming 1/17 in eight.
Like their opponents, Glenwood lost an opener early, with Nathan Moodley not lasting long. His opening partner, Karabo Ntsieng, however, produced a decisive knock on his debut, making 46, which included eight fours, to guide the home team towards a win.
He was the fourth man out, with the total on 118, but by then the Green Machine could taste victory.
Glenwood skipper Ntando Soni followed nine runs later, but he, too, had done his part, contributing a valuable 38 from 57, with two fours.
After 36.2 overs, it was victory to Glenwood as they comfortably took down a team that has enjoyed a good season.
Radhesh Jhilmeet, who was introduced into the attack late, caused the Durban boys some trouble, claiming 3/16 in 4.2 overs, but it was almost over by then. Michaelhouse captain Cameron Strudwick, was tight, as usual, returning 1/26 from his 10 overs.
Scores
Michaelhouse 133/10 (Sebastian Hofmeyr 57*; Daniel Gunawardena 2/18, Ntando Soni 2/30); Glenwood 134/6 Karabo Ntsieng 46, Ntando Soni 38; Radhesh Jhilmeet 3/16) Glenwood won by 4 wickets.
While Glenwood grabbed an impressive 1st XI victory, Michaelhouse’s cricket teams enjoyed a very good day. Their victories included a big win for the u15A side, but Glenwood’s u14C team managed another victory for the Green Machine.

BASKETBALL
The Michaelhouse 1st team enjoyed a comfortable win over Glenwood and, for the most part, that was the order of the day as ‘House’s team dominated. There was one notable exception in the u16A game. While Michaelhouse came away with a W, they were pushed all the way by Glenwood, winning by just three points.
