Kearsney College recorded a comfortable win over Westville Boys’ High in a W100 match on Wednesday. Just four days later, the teams were back doing limited overs battle on Bowden’s on Saturday and, again, the visitors came away with a win.
With clouds covering the sky, Kearsney captain Ross Coetzee called the toss correctly and decided to bowl first, hoping to make use of those conditions. Good decision.
Run scoring was difficult, but Westville’s top order worked hard against some accurate bowling to advance the total to 44/1 before Seth Simpson followed his skipper, Nicandro Kistna, back to the pavilion.
It wasn’t the top order that was the issue, however. It was the fact that the Griffin lost wickets in clumps. When Sean McGough was the fourth batsman out, with the total on 78, two more wickets fell quickly as the hosts slid to 83/6.
Top scorer Kaedan McAllister, who made 28 from 53 deliveries, with four fours, helped lift the total to 107 but, when he was the seventh man to fall, the last three wickets followed for the addition of only four more runs as Westville crashed to 111 all out after 40.3 overs.
Only Max Robertson joined McAllister in reaching the twenties. Usually a destructive striker of the ball. Robertson played within himself to contribute 23 from 64 balls.
What made the difference for Kearsney was the performance of their spinners, with the leggie, Asavela Khambule, capturing 3/13 in six overs, while Ross Coetzee sent down 9.3 overs of off-spin and claimed 3/20.
With 50 overs to score 112 runs, the run rate was never really going to be a problem for Kearsney, and a commanding 39 from 48 balls, with six fours, from Cameron Veenstra set them on course for victory.
The other batsmen found the going tough, but with four of them making it into double figures, just, that was all the visitors needed to take them to a five-wicket win after 33.4 overs.
Sekou Shangase, who has been in fine wicket-taking form for Westville, adding a return of 2/13 from four overs to his stellar season, while Chad van Breda picked up 2/19 from five.
