BASKETBALL
A big game of basketball awaits on Wednesday, 31 January, when the Northwood and Westville 1st teams will do battle, especially as Westville shocked a very good Knights’ team 63-60 in October 2023. Fresh off of putting up 102 points on Hilton, Northwood must be champing at the bit to have a go at the Griffin.
Both schools showed good depth in the open age group on Saturday, with Westville recording three close wins to Northwood’s one.
There was a big result for Northwood in the u16 age group, where their A team beat Westville by six points. Again, though, and pleasingly, the competition was tight, with Northwood claiming three victories to Westville’s two.
At u15 level, Northwood pulled off a clean sweep, while in the u14 matches, Westville recorded a couple of convincing wins, but Northwood edged the age group five victories to four. Good competition!

CRICKET
Westville, with a four-wicket win over Northwood, have put their hands up as, arguably, the leading 1st XI in KZN at present. Coming in the wake of a win over a solid Maritzburg College team last week, it was another good win for the Griffin on a difficult wicket.
There has been a lot of inconsistency among the province’s 1st XIs already, which is something the Knights have shown, but Westville, with a well-balanced line-up, appears to be the steadiest outfit around, so far.
As it was in basketball and water polo, the competition on the cricket fields was compelling and unpredictable, but the edge, in terms of the overall number of wins, went the way of Northwood and, like their basketball teams, the u15 sides went unbeaten.

WATER POLO
The Northwood 1st team’s 6-6 draw with Westville during the week, at Westville, was an excellent result for the Knights against a talented team. And Northwood’s depth was on show as they shared another 6-6 result in the showdown between the seconds.
Overall, there was little to separate the two schools, with Westville recording four wins, Northwood three, and two games ending in a draw.
