DHS vs Kearsney cricket report, all the weekend’s results

CRICKET

On Wednesday, Kearsney College‘s 1st XI had powered their way to a 60-run victory over Durban High School (DHS) in a W100 clash. That result, however, counted for nothing on Saturday as DHS stunned the boys from Botha’s Hill, winning a limited overs match played on the Theobald Oval by 22 runs.

Kearsney, admittedly, suffered an early setback when fast bowler Sandiswa Yeni was unable to complete his first over, which led to Murray Weyer sending down the last ball.

DHS put up 27 for the first wicket before Sbusiso Msibi departed in the ninth over. Ethan Cooper and Ismaeel Omar showed patience as they added 43 runs for the second wicket before Cooper was caught by Jack O’Donovan off the bowling of Asavela Khambule for 17.

Omar stuck to his task but was dismissed only two runs shy of his team’s century, the fourth wicket to fall, having scored 55 from 83 deliveries, with two fours and a six.

It appeared as if Kearsney might bring the DHS innings to an early end when they reduced the home side to 126/7 in the 33rd over. However, Bayanda Majola and Jared Havermann changed the trajectory of the Horseflies’ innings with a key 48-run partnership for the eighth wicket. Majola then departed with the total on 174, with just less than four overs remaining in DHS’ 50-over allotment.

Havermann saw out the inning, delivering a valuable 51 not out from only 57 balls, which included five fours and a six, and helped DHS to 216/9, which was a challenging total on an outfield that doesn’t give up many boundaries.

Jack O’Donovan led the way for Kearsney, capturing 4/45 from his 10 overs, which included getting rid of the dangerous Josh van Biljon and Semal Pillay cheaply.

Kearsney usually play attacking cricket when pursuing a target, but fast bowler, Bayanda Majola, caused chaos early on, sending Matthew Lamplough, Murray Weyer and Cameron Veenstra packing as the visitors stumbled to 31/3 in the 10th over.

In captain Ross Coetzee, however, Kearsney had an in-form player to take charge, and he did it with some style. Batting fourth, Coetzee played a masterful knock, scoring 107 from 120 deliveries, nine of which he despatched for four, and four of which he deposited over the boundary for six.

There was a problem for Kearsney, however, and it was a telling one. Coetzee received little support. Only Keegan de Jager, with 22 from 35 balls, managed anything noteworthy as the visitors limped to 98/7 in the 31st over.

Coetzee bravely fought a lone battle to take a victory away from DHS, and he nearly succeeded. However, he was the ninth man out, caught by Aiden Braun off of Bhavesh Naicker in the 47th over, with the total on 188.

Six runs later, it was all over, and DHS had claimed a prized scalp.

Majola, whose fiery opening spell had set the hosts up for the win, finished with 3/38 from his 10 overs, while Naicker bowled tightly to return the fine figures of 2/25, also from 10. Zaid Motala did his bit by picking up 2/12 in six.

BASKETBALL

The DHS 1st team recorded a notable 23-point victory over Kearsney on Saturday. In October 2023, they had won 50-44 at Kearsney’s SportZone, but playing at home they charged to a big win.

Kearsney showed their strength in depth by splitting the open age group matches against DHS, and then also turning out four more open teams to take on Maritzburg College, who had most of their teams playing against Clifton College at the Riverside Sports Club.

DHS took the u16A win, but Kearsney won three of the five games in the age group.

WATER POLO

In the tight confines of the DHS pool, it appeared as if the Kearsney 1st team would blow the home team out of the water. Kearsney started like a house on fire and DHS appeared shellshocked as they fell 0-5 behind in no time at all.

Credit to DHS, however, they pulled themselves together and, once they had done that, it went, pretty much, goal-for-goal as the Horseflies ensured they would emerge from the fixture with their honour intact.
