Rough festival for Hilton, Saints 1st teams, u15 sides shine

15 January 2024

The Peninsula Cricket Festival brought together some of South Africa’s leading cricket-playing schools between 9 and 13 January, with Bishops playing host to the event. KZN was represented by Hilton College and St Charles College.

There’s no way to sugarcoat it. Both Hilton and Saints disappointed, with neither 1st XI managing a win in five matches. Their under-15 sides fared much better, however.

What is surprising is that both schools’ 1st XIs are filled with familiar names. They are not inexperienced. But both were well off the pace. Both suffered massive losses on the opening day, and they failed to recover from there.

Bishops’ Adnaan Lagadien smashed 218* against Hilton as the home team put up 325/7 and Peyton Leigh then knocked over 7/44 as Hilton fell for only 138, leaving Bishops the winners by 187 runs. Ben Hockly, with 78, scored almost 57 percent of the Hilton runs.

St Charles, meanwhile, were sent packing for 126 by Pretoria Boys High, with the reliable Cian Fortmann contributing 47. PBHS, then, powered their way to a 10-wicket victory.

Hilton produced their best performance on the second day, with Hockly scoring 69 as they tallied 220/9 against Affies. It wasn’t enough, however, as Affies, led by 100 from Vian Pretorius, recorded a three-wicket win.

The best showing from Saints came the following day, when Marcell Wellman made 120 and Rico Honiball 52 to help them to a solid-looking 277/6 against St David’s Marist Inanda. Unfortunately for the Pietermaritzburg side, they didn’t enjoy nearly as much success with the ball and the Johannesburg school claimed a five-wicket win.

Both Bishops and Rondebosch Boys’ High recorded perfect records, and both were dominant in their five victories. They appear to be among the elite of 2024’s teams.

Under-15s

Strangely enough, one of the big positives for Hilton came in a loss for their under-15 team against Rondebosch. With Schalk Fourie striking a huge 189*, ‘Bosch put up a daunting 382/9. Despite this, Ryan Kellis excelled with a return of 5/45.

Where Hilton impressed was in their fight. They showed plenty of character when they batted, taking the game to Rondebosch. Ben Wilson made an unbeaten 122, Sean Burman weighed in with 86, and Obakeng Motsepa made 50 not out as Hilton mustered 302/5. That left them well beaten, but theirs was an honourable defeat.

Wilson scored another century for Hilton in their first game, which saw them crush Bishops by 84 runs. Hilton also convincingly beat Affies and saw off Wynberg, but they were beaten by Waterkloof.

The Saints u15s enjoyed a very good festival. After going down to a hard-fought 28-run defeat to Pretoria Boys High in their opener, they didn’t lose again. They drew with SACS, won by 5 wickets against St David’s, handed Wynberg a 16-run loss, and won by 14 runs against Rondebosch.
