Westville Boys’ High and St Charles College engaged in high tempo, blow-for-blow basketball showdown on Saturday, with little to separate the two teams until the latter stages of the final quarter.
It was 33-32 in favour of Saints at halftime. Later, they led only 50-49, and then 64-62. But the Pietermaritzburg side finally pulled clear of their never-say-die opponents at the very end to claim a 71-64 win.
James Wucherer shone for St Charles, smoothly nailing four three-pointers, while Head Boy Nicholas Oldfield delivered for his team when the chips were down, taking control of the paint to put away four crucial two-pointers in succession as time wound down.
It was a tremendous contest and a credit to both schools, including their supporters, who filled the venue with sound from start to finish.
Unfortunately, a number of the matches scheduled for the outdoor courts had to be called off because of heavy rain.
Saints came away with the wins in the open age group, none of them easy, but Westville imposed their will on the visitors in the under-16A and under-15A games.
The under-14A clash went down to the wire, with Saints pulling out a narrow two-point victory after extra time.
