Maritzburg College’s World Cup final fever featured on eNCA

27 October 2023

With Maritzburg College Old Boy, Jesse Kriel, set to run onto the Stade de France on Saturday evening for the final of the 2023 Rugby World Cup, the Pietermaritzburg school has a more vested interest in the biggest game of them all than most. And that’s saying a lot, considering how much the Springboks mean to the average South African.

eNCA paid a visit to Maritzburg College to see how the red, black and white are getting behind the green and gold and Jesse Kriel, who was selected for SA Schools in his matric year of 2012.

Sasha Kadira, College’s 2023 Head Prefect and captain of the 1st XV, led his fellow learners as the school showed their support for their Old Boy and the Boks.

Deputy Head Matthew Marwick spoke about College’s outstanding rugby history and tradition, while Director of Rugby Hendré Marnitz shared his thoughts on Jesse Kriel, whom he first met when the former College fullback was 19-years-of-age.

Cody Robinson, who on Friday took over from Sasha Kadira as College’s Head Prefect for 2024, packed down in the front row for the College 1st XV in 2023. He and flanker Kevin Ayliffe also expressed their hopes for the final in the eNCA report.
