Maritzburg College held its twelfth annual Passing of the Drum Ceremony on Friday to celebrate the appointments of the school’s pupil leadership for 2024.
Cody Robinson will serve as Head Prefect, with Phiwayinkosi Kubheka named the Senior Deputy Head Prefect. (It’s a case of the front-rankers leading the way. Both represented the College 1st XV at prop in 2023.) The Deputy Head Prefects are Inam Jikijo, Ipeleng Mosupye, and James Slevin.
The 160-year-old school said in a statement: “To be appointed as a College Prefect is one of the highest honours that the school can bestow upon a pupil, and along with this honour, comes accountability and responsibility.
“These boys have endured a rigorous process to achieve this honour and they would not have been appointed without the wider College’s pupil and staff support.”
College’s Shouting Captains, who are voted on by their peers, fulfil a unique role at the school, with an emphasis on spirit and camaraderie. Their job is “to inspire and cajole the troops on Basher Ridge, on Pape’s and elsewhere, to get behind our College men,” the school said.
Leading the cheering in their distinctive white blazers will be Noah Jackson (Barns), Lachlann Johnstone (Barns) and Mvano Rubuluza (Lamond).
House leaders, house captains and vice-captains for College’s 10 day-houses, as well as the five boarder prefects who will lead each of the boarding house, which are home to 470 boys, were also announced.
James Slevin was appointed Senior Boarder Prefect and Head of Clark House. Julian Konigkramer will lead Nathan House, Noah Jackson heads up Hudson House, Jake Jansen is the Head of Shepstone House and Struan Oosthuizen is the Head of Elliott House.
The Passing of the Drum ceremony culminates in the outgoing Head Prefect handing over the leadership reins to his successor, with the symbolic handing over of the drum.
It was, for many years, a tradition that the outgoing Head Prefect would place a written message to his successor in the old drum, but the original old Thrash Drum is now on permanent display in the Victoria Hall, so a side-drum from the old school cadet band is now used in its place.
