Clifton College
The St Stithians Invitational Water Polo Tournament opened with a rude welcome for Clifton College as they fell 6-8 to St Alban’s in their opening match in Johannesburg on Thursday.
At the SACS Water Polo Tournament, St Alban’s delivered one of their better performances in a losing effort against Clifton, going down 5-8. This time, though, it was the team from Pretoria that enjoyed the W.
After their early morning loss, Clifton came back strongly later in the day to handle St David’s Marist Inanda 5-2.
It appears as if Clifton’s Group A is going to be one of the most evenly contested, and they’ll have to be on their game, especially on Friday afternoon, when they tackle St John’s College.
Michaelhouse
While Clifton went down to start the day, Michaelhouse got the ball rolling for KZN teams, winning a hard-fought clash against KES by an 8-6 margin. In their second outing, they ran roughshod over Pretoria Boys High, winning 15-0.
It was an excellent day for House, but day two will be a lot tougher. Their schedule includes a morning meeting with SACS, 2023’s kingpins, and an afternoon clash with Bishops.
SACS went two for two on the day, including an 11-6 win over Bishops, but their 15-6 victory over Pretoria Boys High was far less emphatic than Michaelhouse’s win. Make no mistake, though, the red and white are in for a very thorough examination.

Hilton College
Hilton College had no problems in their opener against Grey High School, rolling along to a comfortable 13-2 win. Affies, however, threw a spanner in the works when they hung a 4-7 defeat on the Midlands side in the afternoon.
Hilton faces St Benedict’s and Rondebosch on Friday, with Bosch clearly the tougher of the two matches. The Capetonians powered their way to a 12-2 win over Bennies in their opener and then beat Grey High 9-5.
In a clash of schools from the same city, the hosts, St Stithians, defeated Jeppe by an 11-6 margin. They also handled Grey College, winning 12-4. Meanwhile, St John’s held off St David’s for a tight 8-6 win and were convincing 12-3 winners against Reddam House Helderfontein.
Two other schools won both of their day one matches, namely St Andrew’s College and Affies.
