Hilton College and Michaelhouse did battle in the annual Douglas Cup at the Bosch Hoek Golf Course on Sunday. The schools’ 2nd teams were also in action.
After the betterball competition, the two 2nd sides were level at 2 – 2. Hilton, though, ran out comfortable winners in the singles, winning those 5.5 – 2.5, to secure an overall victory of 7.5 to 4.5.
In the duel between the two 1st teams, Michaelhouse shot out of the gate, roaring into a 4.5 to 1.5 lead after the foursomes.
Fightback
Hilton, as could be expected, fought back valiantly in the second round, with the teams deadlocking at 3-3.
Michaelhouse, though, edged the singles by a narrow 6.5 to 5.5 margin to secure a 14-10 victory.
Before their win at Hilton this season, the House 1st XV had last beaten their great rivals in 2016. In a similar fashion, Michaelhouse’s last Douglas Cup victory had been in 2015.
Now, 2023 has brought a breakthrough for the boys from Balgowan.
