Clifton College’s outgoing Head Boy David van Rooyen showed he is far more than a supremely talented member of Clifton’s outstanding 1st water polo team at the school’s recent prize giving. By the end of the ceremony, he was weighed down by a plethora of prizes recognising academic excellence and leadership.
Van Rooyen’s subject prizes
He won awards for Accounting, Afrikaans, English, Mathematics and Physical Science. He also received the Founders Trophy for Commerce and the Nairac Trophy for Mathematics.
He was also awarded the Heather Bensch English Subject Prize and the Richard Edwards Trophy for Achievement in Language. Add to that the Clifton Senior Science Trophy and the Subject Prize for Physical Science. Furthermore, he also received Subject Prizes for Geography and Life Orientation, along with the trophies for both subjects.
Van Rooyen’s exemplary example was recognised with the presentation of the George Thiel Trophy for Leadership and the Alastair Clarke Trophy.
Unsurprisingly, given that boatload of awards, he was awarded the prestigious Dux for 2023 (middle in feature photo). Rhys Jackson (left in the feature photo) was named the Dux Proxime Accessit, while Justin Gatonby (right) received the trophy for third in grade 12.
Winners
In Business Studies, Justin Gatonby received the Business Studies Subject Prize and the Haribhai Trophy for Entrepreneurship, while Rhys Jackson’s achievements in the Arts brought him the Dramatic Arts Subject Prize and the Trophy for Arts and Culture.
The Subject Prize and Senior Trophy for Engineering, Graphics and Design went to Charlie Good.
Luke Lawlor, meanwhile, was presented with the Wade Osborne Award and the Subject Prize for History, and Levi Anastasis-Lan won the Subject Prize for Information Technology and the Dhai Technology Trophy.
isiZulu accolades went to Loyiso Dlamini, who received both the Subject Prize and Trophy, while the Life Sciences Subject Prize and the Access Group Young Scientist Trophy were presented to Ahmed Kharwa.
Ben Ribbink claimed the Mathematical Literacy Subject Prize and the Clifton Trophy, and Nkazimulo Mabaso received the 2023 Subject Prize and the Sayers Music Trophy.
Samuel Pearse was the recipient of the Visual Arts Subject Prize and the Clifton Art Trophy, as well as the Leighton Fellowship Trophy, and the Sally Dreyer Trophy for Enthusiasm and Participation.
Liam Corbett was presented with the Founders Trophy for Academic Perseverance, while the Haffajee/Kadwa Family Trophy went to Enock Ngoie, and Loyiso Dlamini and Enock Ngoie received the Fabrice Muhizi Trophy for Gratitude.
Both Rorisang Molefe and Michael Langston were recognised with the Michael Downes Trophy for Leadership.
