BASKETBALL
Kearsney shaded the won-loss record thanks to their junior age groups after a day of exciting basketball action against Michaelhouse on Saturday.
The boys from Botha’s Hill claimed a tough win in the 1st team game, Michaelhouse took the under-15 A and under-16 A honours, and Kearsney emerged with the under-14 A victory.
Saturday also marked the first time in four years that Kearsney had hosted Michaelhouse, and the home team was eager to lock horns with their Midlands’ rivals after House secured a narrow win over Kearsney at the Independent Schools Stayers’ Tournament.
Kearsney worked their way into a 13-8 lead after the first quarter, but Michaelhouse came roaring back. Their pressure forced the hosts into fouls, and presented with free throw opportunities, House lifted themselves into a 20-18 advantage at the break.
The back-and-forth nature of the contest continued into the third quarter, with Kearsney edging ahead 32-30. Then, with their man-to-man pressure paying off, the home team broke away to win by 14 points. Kearsney’s Reabetswe Sithole led the scoring for both teams with 16 points.
