Maritzburg College inducted their matric class into the Maritzburg College Old Boys’ Association on Thursday evening. The occasion was marked by a heart-warming address delivered by Valedictorian of the Class of 2023, Luc du Toit, which focussed on highlights of the past year, and on the five years he shared with his classmates.
On Friday morning, the outstanding achievements of the sixth formers was celebrated at the annual Maritzburg College Speech Day and Valedictory Service.
In his address to the boys, College’s Headmaster, Chris Luman, spoke about the true meaning of success, and what it means to be successful.
Guest of Honour
The Guest of Honour was Wilhelm de Wet, a talented sportsman and top academic during his school days, who is now an actuary and the founder of the Actuarial Recruitment Business, SA3, which is the leading firm of its kind in South Africa.
He shared an inspirational story about the Jakes Gerwel Technical School and Bonnievale – a community-driven education solution, which has not only transformed the local community but has also given hope to many other communities across South Africa.
In addition to the various subject prizes, a number of special prizes were also presented to College boys who have excelled in their final year of school.
Dux
Declan Pillay was recognised as the Dux, for which he received the FNB Prize and the Levinsohn Trophy.
He was also presented with a Merit Certificate, the Epoch Optima Prize for Further Studies in Mathematics, the PWC Prize for Accounting and further prizes for Afrikaans and Physical Science.
Second in the sixth form was Tayughe Ramdhass, who was awarded the Nedbank Proxime Accessit Prize, a Merit Certificate, the Olley Prize for History and English, and the Prize for English.
Matthew van Rooyen received the Colenbrander Accountants Prize for third in the form, as well as a Merit Certificate, and the Prize for Business Studies.
Prizes for service to the school
Also among the top prize winners were outgoing Head Prefect, Sasha Kadira who received the Phelps-Cannon Prize for Service to the School, and the Deputy Head Prefect, Thaseem Ganie, who was awarded the Nora Cook Trophy for Altruistic Service.
Senior Deputy Head Prefect, Luc du Toit, received the Maritzburg College Old Boys’ Association Prize for Service to the School, as well as a Merit Certificate, the KickstART Prize for Visual Arts, the Charles Taylor Award for Good Fellowship, the prize for Achievement in Academics and Sport, and the Mike Brown Five Pillars Award.
Ross Froise was presented with a Merit Certificate, the PKF Trophy for Economics, and the prize for Achievement in Academics and Culture.
