After a very tough opening day of action, DHS, Glenwood and Westville Boys’ High gradually improved their standings at the Nedbank Grey College Soccer Tournament, which concluded on Tuesday.

Playoffs
DHS and Glenwood fought their way through to the Plate competition, with the Horseflies winning their quarterfinal, but the Green Machine went down. School then did superbly well to get by Saint David’s Marist Inanda in the semis and Parktown Boys in the final to claim the silverware.
Westville didn’t have as successful a tournament. They were, above all others, the hard-luck team, losing four matches by a single goal. They did, at least, claim two victories on the final day. Glenwood went one and two, although one of those defeats was from the penalty spot.
DHS, though, finished with a flourish, taking three wins and showing big match temperament, as two of the victories came in penalty shootouts.
Hopewell Shangase, who earlier this year represented the South African Sevens Team at the Trinbago Commonwealth Youth Games, shone in front of goal and finished as the tournament’s top goal scorer.
St Stithians College claimed the Cup title, defeating local team, HTS Louis Botha, in the final. Saints enjoyed a tremendous weekend overall, with their cricket team cruising to four wins from four matches at the Oppenheimer Michaelmas Cricket Week.
