Four teams remain unbeaten at Michaelmas Week

2 October 2023

Kearsney College, St Stithians, Affies and Grey College maintained their 100 percent records after three days of the 2023 Oppenheimer Michaelmas Cricket Week, but it was a near thing for the boys from Bloem on Monday.

Grey vs Clifton

In a low-scoring contest played at UKZN, they squeezed out a seven-run win over Clifton College.

Grey owed plenty to their opening batsman, Adem Niewoudt, who made 46 from 60 deliveries in their total of 107 all out. Their next highest score was only 15.

Shiraz Perumal, with 4 for 16, and Huzaifah Badat, with 3 for 12, had their way with the Grey batsmen.

Three Clifton batsmen bettered Grey’s second best of 15 runs, but Byron Ward’s 25 was their highest score. Darion Rabie, with a sensational return of 4 for 15 in 10, and Jonathan Muller with 3 for 25, helped Grey dismiss the Durban boys for 100.

Maritzburg College vs Pretoria Boys’ High

Meanwhile, the hosts, Maritzburg College survived a thriller against Pretoria Boys High on Goldstone’s.

PBHS posted 232 all out, batting first, with captain Keagan Thiele making 68 and Patrick Mouton 42. Spinner Oliver da Costa was among the wickets, picking up 3 for 45.

In reply, College crawled over the line, winning with one wicket in hand. Michael Gibson’s 54 paced their innings and there was solid support from Sphamandla Dzanibe (47) and Caleb Thomas (34). Callum Croome took 3 for 41.

Kearsney College vs Saint John’s College

Fresh off capturing the Saint John’s Rams T20 title in Zimbabwe, Kearsney has been on a tear at the Michaelmas Week, and they continued their fine form against Saint John’s College, who had won their first two games.

The Gauteng side batted first, and Luke Francis struck 101 to steer Saint John’s to 241 all out, while Murray Weyer removed four batsmen at a cost of 46 runs.

Kearsney then demonstrated their considerable batting depth, with Ross Coetzee making an undefeated 95 and Adam Zeiler 57 not out.

Cameron Veenstra, with 36, also provided valuable runs as Kearsney recorded a six-wicket victory. They’ll face Affies on Tuesday in a showdown between two teams with perfect records.

Michaelhouse vs Affies

Michaelhouse, though, threatened to take down Affies at Collegians, with a good bowling performance that restricted the Pretoria school to 151 all out.

Divan de Villiers, with 43, and Matthew Seymore, with 35, were the mainstays of the Affies’ innings, while Cameron Strudwick’s left-arm spin tore holes in the Affies’ batting, as he took 3 for 19 in nine, and Ethan Muir stood out, too, with his return of 3 for 24 in 10.

House, though, stumbled out of the gate in their run chase, losing six wickets in the space of 18 runs to slide to 44 for 6 in the 23rd over. Their key batsman, Murray Baker, was run out for 28.

Cameron Strudwick defied the Affies’ attack, making 24, but Michaelhouse came up 29 runs short of the opposition’s total as Jorich van Schalkwyk devastated their reply, sending five batsmen packing at a cost of only 12 runs from his 10 overs.

Xavier de Wet took 2 for 14 and Heinrich Muller 2 for 21.

Glenwood vs St Stithians

St Stithians, like Kearsney, recorded their third emphatic win on the trot.

Out at Eston, Glenwood did well to bowl out Saints for 227, with Bandile Mbatha claiming 5 for 42, while Emile Odendaal, with 59, and Richard Seletswane, with 44, paced the St Stithians innings.

Glenwood lost too many wickets up front to truly challenge the Joburg boys, and they were bowled for 148, with Cameron Laing making 47 and Slade Locke 32.

Speedster Kwena Maphaka wrought havoc on the Green Machine’s reply, knocking over 5 for 28, while Lhuan-dre Pretorius took 3 for 29.

Hilton College vs KES

After going down to St Stithians on Sunday, Hilton College returned to the win column with a comprehensive 129-run victory over KES.

Hilton captain Ross Boast led their batting effort, making 69, while Ben Hockly weighed in with 46, as the Midlands’ school put up 257 all out.

Boast then captured 5 for 31 with the ball to have KES back in the pavilion for just 128.

Westville Boys’ High vs Jeppe

Westville Boys’ High turned in a strong performance in the field to set themselves up for a four-wicket win over Jeppe at Lynwood.

Tshepo Strafa made 47, but no one else made it beyond the teens, as Jeppe mustered just 135 all out. Had it not been for 28 extras, which included 23 wides, they would have barely reached triple figures.

Blake Simpson picked up 4 for 31 in 10, and Roxton Payne snared 3 for 23 in his 10 overs of left-arm spin.

An innings of 38 from Blake Simpson was the cornerstone of the Westville reply. It was slow, but they claimed the win after 45.2 overs, despite a tidy effort from Jeppe skipper, Jaydon Brooker, who claimed 2 for 24 in 10.

Saint Charles vs Saint David’s

At Saint Charles, Saint David’s Marist Inanda found themselves in early trouble, but the in-form Gomolemo Phiri, fresh off a century on Sunday, steadied their innings, striking 11 fours in a knock of 66 from 78 balls before he was run out by Matthew Urquhart. An unbeaten 54 from Kamogelo Phiri helped lift the Joburgers to 192 for 8 in their 50 overs.

Jehan Adonis, with 3 for 10 in five overs, was the pick of the Saints’ attack, while Brendon Sunguro was very good, taking 2 for 16 in eight tight overs.

A 119-run partnership for the second wicket then set the home side up for a convincing five-wicket win, with 12 overs to spare. Opening batsman Sam Brown top scored with 61 from 59 deliveries, while Ntando Zuma tallied 59 from 61.

Northwood vs Waterkloof

Waterkloof came off second against Kearsney College on Sunday, but they returned to winning ways on Monday at UKZN.

Northwood’s Knights posted 224 for 9 against the Klofies, with Evan Fouche (58) and Nqobani Mokoena (51) sharing a 125-run stand for the fifth wicket. Franco Schmidt, meanwhile, snapped up 4 for 40 with the ball.

The Pretoria school then took 43.3 overs to overhaul the Northwood total, passing it with four wickets down.

Divan Behrens led the way with 80 at the top of the order, while Beukes van der Berg (55) and Riley Miller (38) were among the runs for a third match in succession.

DHS vs Cornwall Hill College

At Richmond, Cornwall Hill College, after a couple of sub-standard batting performances, really hit their straps against DHS.

Lethabo Phahlamohlaka went big, recording the highest individual score of the week thus far, with 140, while Richard Williams contributed 54 as Cornwall tallied 328 for 9.

DHS never really managed to mount a challenge to Cornwall Hill’s daunting total and were bowled out for 154. Semal Pillay resisted with 42, but Ryan Herselman (3 for 10) and Yuveerin Govendor (3 for 3) ripped the DHS innings apart.
