Recent Clifton Water Polo Tournament finalists, SACS and Paul Roos Gymnasium, staked their claims to being top dogs by both going four for four on day one of the Hussar Grill SACS Water Polo Tournament on Saturday. Clifton College, third behind the two Cape schools in their home waters, won two of four games, and went down by a single goal in the other two.
They cruised to a 6-1 win over Wynberg in their opener, and then saw off Saint Alban’s College 8-5. The momentum didn’t continue later in the day, however, as both Bishops and Grey High School sneaked 3-2 wins over the Durban boys.
Kearsney College matched Clifton’s day one record, beating Jeppe 5-2, and Grey College 6-2, but suffering a 2-7 loss to St Stithians and a narrow 5-6 defeat to the unbeaten hosts, SACS.

It was, again, a 50/50 record for KZN as Northwood won two of their four games. They fell 2-5 to Paul Roos in a tough opener, but roared back with a comprehensive 8-0 defeat of Parktown Boys. Saint David’s Marist Inanda, then, handed the Knights a 6-1 loss. But the day ended on a high for the school from the north of Durban when they beat Saint Benedict’s College 6-2.
The best record of the KZN schools after day one belonged to Hilton College, but only just. They outplayed Saint David’s Marist 5-1 in their opener but were then held to a 4-4 draw by Selborne College. Saint John’s then defeated Hilton 7-3, before the boys from the Midlands hammered Parktown 7-1.
