Kearsney’s Independent Schools Stayers’ Basketball Tournament is approaching rapidly. It takes place from 22 to 25 September and is bigger than ever, with 48 teams competing in three divisions.
Kearsney Headmaster Patrick Lees, in a welcome message on the Kearsney Events app, wrote: “This year is the 10th time we host this tournament, bringing together a record number of teams – a testament to our community’s growing enthusiasm for basketball.”

Lees also extended a special welcome to tournament newcomers’ Meridian Karino Independent School, The King’s School Linbro Park, Sacred Heart College, Pridwin Prep School, and Saint Benedict’s Prep.
The tournament features 20 teams in the A Division, 16 teams in the B Division, and 12 schools in the Primary Schools Division.
Elite teams
The A Division is packed with many of the leading names in schoolboy basketball in South Africa and some classic battles are, no doubt, set to take place.
Pool A features Saint Charles College, who were ranked the number one team in the country this past year. They’ll be tested by Saint Alban’s College, Michael Mount, Clifton College and Enjabulweni from Eswatini.

In Pool B are Saint Benedict’s College, Michaelhouse, SAHETI, The Clan and The King’s School Linbro Park.
Michaelhouse had a somewhat inconsistent 2023, but they showed what they are capable of when they captured the inaugural Maritzburg College Jenny Orchard Invitational title in February by defeating the top two teams in the country in the semi-final and final respectively, Maritzburg College and Saint Charles.
Saint David’s Marist Inanda, who finished as runners-up to Saint Charles in the Saint John’s Basketball Tournament in February, are in Pool C with Saint John’s College, Peace Players International, Hilton College and Usuthu Forest, a second team from Eswatini.
The hosts, Kearsney College, who were beaten by Saint Charles in the semi-finals of the Saint John’s Basketball Tournament, are in Pool D with St Stithians College, Kingswood College, Meridian Karino High School, and Sacred Heart College.
