Michaelhouse recently hosted their annual 1st team basketball dinner at the Lythwood Lodge, with players, parents and coaches in attendance.
The highlight of the House year has, undoubtedly, been their victory in the inaugural Maritzburg College Jenny Orchard Invitational.
To win the title, they beat the top two teams in South Africa in 2023, defeating Maritzburg College, who had earlier in the season beaten them by 19 points, in the semi-finals, and then reversing two previous losses to Saint Charles College, who would go on to win the Saint John’s Basketball Tournament, in the final.
Award winners
Elihle Ngcobo won the Coach’s Award for the Most Valuable Player. Jordan Kleynhans picked up the Captain’s Award for Most Improved Player, and Jordan Baxter received the Witherspoon Trophy for Best Defensive Player.
In the Inter-house Basketball Trophy was presented to Tatham.
The next big tournament on Michaelhouse’s calendar will be the Kearsney Independent Schools Stayers’ Basketball Tournament (ISSBT 2023), which takes place from Friday, 22 September, to Monday, 25 September.
