Clifton hosted Kearsney College at the Riverside Sports Club on Saturday, 2 September, for an interesting mix of football matches, with the Clifton under-16 age group teams matching up against a line-up of Kearsney’s deep age group sides.
It was a good day for the maroon-clad Botha’s Hill boys, with most of the results going their way, although the Clifton under-16 sides, for the most part, had the better of their clashes against their older opposition from Kearsney.
Victory in the 1st XI game went to Kearsney, who were buoyed by a win over Michaelhouse last weekend, which included two of the best goals scored by any team this season. The visitors also claimed wins, but only by the odd goal, in closely contested under-15A and under-14A matches.
1st XI game
Clifton started the 1st XI clash strongly, with striker Rocco Rocha making a nuisance of himself and putting the Kearsney College defence under pressure. Slowly, though, the visitors worked their way into the contest, with Lethu Ngidi leading their offence.
He came desperately close to putting his team in front after beating a number of Clifton players, but his shot hit the upright and stayed out. It was goalless at the break.
Ngidi, though, managed to get his name on the scoresheet in the second half when he struck from the spot after Clifton conceded a penalty.
Late in the game, a sharp counter-attack was finished by Chad Croshaw to secure a 2-0 win for the boys in maroon and white.
