The imagination and talent of grade nine boys at Kearsney College was on show at this year’s History Expo, which was hosted in Henderson Hall recently, with the boys producing a wide variety of original and thought-provoking displays depicting historic events.
Theme
Their displays were built around the theme of “historical events that have had a significant impact on our world”.
The expo encourages boys to research topics not normally found in the curriculum, challenges them to collaborate in small groups, and to allocate tasks responsibly. Creativity and the ability to engage with an audience were criteria used in assessing the submissions.
Neil Peacock, the Head of History at Kearsney, said the high standard and variety of thought-provoking displays was particularly impressive.
Top exhibitors
Liam Botha, Ethan King and Bryce Seidler (see feature photo by Hannah Shirley) were declared the winning trio for their portrayal of The History of the Wheel.
The judges were also impressed by the depiction of the nuclear incident at Chernobyl produced by Yusuf Badat, Thomas Blomfield, Michael Hean and Oliver Moore-Gordon, who finished in second place.

Outstanding achievements in history
The Kearsney College history programme has been riding the crest of a wave in recent times.
Within the past year, Connor van Heerden finished joint-first in the South African Junior History Olympiad, with Jason Denekamp, Joshua-Peter Clark and Oliver Tubb placing within the top five percent in the country, and Thomas Blomfield within the top 10 percent.
Recently, Matthew Lamplough placed in the top five percent of the SA Senior History Olympiad, while Daniel Bothma and Jack White finished in the top 10 percent, and Matthew Guson and Matthew Shepherd in the top 15 percent.
