The Michaelhouse Chamber Choir visited George this past weekend to participate in the seventh annual Southern Cape Sports Tours National “Cantamus!” Choral Festival and Competition, which drew 23 choirs from across South Africa.
Quick Latin lesson: cantamus means I sing, and sing the boys from Balgowan did, performing exceptionally well in an event that included choirs from, among others, Durban, Johannesburg, East London, Gqeberha, Hermanus, Kimberley, Bloemfontein, Uitenhage, Tshwane and Cape Town.
Exceptional achievements
Competing in the Chamber Choir category, Michaelhouse placed first in the Equal Voices Boys’ Choir section, and were second overall in the Chamber Choirs category, scoring 82.31 percent for which they were awarded a Gold Certificate.
In the overall competition, Clarendon High took first place, with Welgemoed Primary School in second, and the Saint Mary’s DSG Choir in third. The second and third placed finishers ended less than a percentage point clear of Michaelhouse.
The Michaelhouse Chamber Choir is yet another example of the exciting holistic approach to education by KZN’s leading boys’ schools, and the excellence of the arts and culture offerings is something to treasure and enjoy. Well done!
