Hilton College’s debaters have shone in the Pietermaritzburg Schools’ Debating League while, in Durban, DHS were in title-winning form in the Durban Coastals Debating League.
Hilton’s grade 8 team – Analo Vidal, Ntsika Kleinbooi, Raphael Dube and Layton Stokes (shown in feature photo with Master in Charge of Debating, Graeme Roberts) – were crowned champions of the Pietermaritzburg Schools’ Debating League, with Layton Stokes receiving the award for best speaker.
Their senior debating team – Khanya Mhlongo, Shailen Naidoo and Munashe Musora – also claimed the league honours, with Shailen Naidoo being named the best speaker.
Meanwhile, Khanya Mhlongo received a special award for his contributions to debating over the past five years. Earlier this year, in June, he finished in the top 12 in the National English Olympiad.

DHS dominates in Durban
In Durban, the DHS senior debating team captured the Durban Coastals Debating League title with a win over Our Lady of Fatima.
School’s Shyaam Maharaj and Xanda Theologo were also named the league’s most promising debaters, while Kian Rama and Sbani Maphumulo were the DHS winners of the league’s spirit of debating.
This was followed by Sbani Maphumulo and Xanda Theologo contesting the KZN Provincial Championship, where Theologo placed sixth overall. Both boys were selected as members of the KZN squad.
