Saint Charles College hosted the inaugural Saints Sevens on Saturday in Pietermaritzburg, on a weekend when about 1 000 sportspeople descended on the school’s campus to compete in five different sporting codes.
The line-up of Sevens teams was boosted by DHS participating for the first time this season, following the completion of their rugby season against Jeppe last weekend in Johannesburg.
The Horseflies brought a touch of flair to proceedings, and claimed some good scalps along the way, but it was not quite enough to get them into the title game. Given what they showed first time out, though, they’ll be a factor in future tournaments.

Saints on song
The hosts, Saint Charles, however, were once again on song and produced a string of fine performances to secure a spot in the final. Their success has been one of the stories of the early part of the season.

They beat Kearsney 26-0, Michaelhouse B 45-7 and Clifton 47-5 before being pushed all the way by DHS. They emerged from that clash as 28-21 victors.
Finalists
Their opponents in the final were Westville Boys’ High. The Griffins secured their spot in the title decider after romping to a 49-0 victory over Hilton B, winning a tight one from DHS by 12-5, then comfortably defeating Hilton A 38-19 and Michaelhouse 48-12.
In the battle for the title, with four demanding matches already in the bag for both teams, it was Westville that came away with the win, triumphing 28-17.
Under-15s
The under-15 title was contested between Westville and Hilton.
The teams met early in the day, in their first games of the event, with Hilton sneaking a narrow 14-12 victory. In the final, though, they were more convincing, scoring a 24-12 win.
Well-run
Well done to Saint Charles College on a well-run event. The atmosphere around Old Orchards was inviting and colourful and the on-field product was highly entertaining, too.
It might have been the inaugural Saint Sevens, but it appeared to be run like a well-oiled machine.
