The 2023 Independent Schools u18 Rugby Festival concluded in Bloemfontein on Wednesday with the four KZN schools all recording wins to finish a perfect 12 from 12 for the event.
Clifton College equalled their biggest win of the season, 73-0, against CBC Boksburg. They beat Richards Bay High by that exact score in their season-opener.
Hilton College and Saint Charles College cruised to comfortable victories, with Hilton defeating Saint David’s Marist Inanda 31-14, and Saint Charles handing Saint Stithian’s a 40-17 loss.
A fine display of running rugby
The Pietermaritzburg School delivered a fine display of running rugby, but their Johannesburg opposition finished strongly to bring some respectability to the final score.
Hooker Matthew Urquhart really caught the eye for Saints. An outstanding cricketer, he brings rare ball skills to the position, along with a physical presence. He pierced the Saint Stithian’s defences twice for tries and came within a metre of adding a third.
With three matches being played simultaneously, only matches on the Hickling A Field were broadcast on the final day, those being between Saint Charles College and Saint Stithian’s College, and Kearsney College and Saint Andrew’s School.
In other games, Union High overwhelmed a Free State Development Team, and, in a clash of Pretoria schools, Cornwall Hill College claimed a 10-point victory over Saint Alban’s College.
