DHS presents “Grease”

20 June 2023

There are not many musicals that stack up to “Grease” for its humorous, happy vibe and sing-along, catchy music, and Durban High School will be putting their spin on the much-beloved musical from 25-30 July.

It’s a big production, with a cast of 55, made up of 32 DHS boys, from grades 8 to 12, and girls from 12 schools. Logistically, it’s quite some undertaking.

The story

The well-known story is set at Rydell High, a fictional school in the USA, in 1959.

Danny Zuko, who will be played by grade 11 student Unaye Mndau, returns to school from the summer holidays, telling his friends about an Australian girl, Sandy Olsson, he met while at the beach.

Then, he discovers Sandy is attending Rydell High on an exchange and he’s challenged with the peer pressure of being part of the cool crowd and his love for her. It’s a fun-filled juggling act.

The musical also follows the fortunes of Danny’s and Sandy’s friends as they navigate their own relationships and influence the two main characters. It’s a blast and aimed at all ages. Its appeal is universal.

Bookings

Various ticket options are available for Grease, with seats at Barnyard-style tables costing R120 each (bring your own food and drink), and raked seating at the back of the DC Thompson Hall available at only R60.
