Emulating the success of their 1st XI, the Maritzburg College under-16 A football team claimed some second term silverware by winning the KZN High School Football Association’s Coastal Tournament on Wednesday at Chiltern Park with a highly entertaining 3-2 victory over Sastri College. (Don’t miss the highlights below!)
In a match worthy of a Final, College led 1-0 at the break, thanks to the in-form and deadly Mazithi Qasha. Soon, they increased their advantage to 2-0 early in the second half with a beautifully weighted pass putting Qasha in for a brace.
Game on
It looked as if Maritzburg College would cruise to victory, but Sastri College, who had drawn 2-2 with the same opposition earlier in the competition, were full of fight and halved the red, black and white’s lead when the College defence stood flat-footed while a teasing cross was floated in. A faint touch found the corner of the goal and it was game on once more.
When College struck for a third time, with a wonderfully judged shot from out wide by Malachi Momple, it looked as if it was all over bar the shouting, but Sastri responded superbly, netting almost immediately with a spectacular snap-shot from distance.
That made for a nervy ending, but the boys from the KZN capital held firm against their Durban opponents to secure a 3-2 win and the title of champions.
