Westville Boys’ High’s Bowden’s was a cauldron of sound and spirit on Saturday for the visit of Durban High School on the Griffins’ Reunion Weekend.
The DHS 1st XV turned in the performance of the day, running in some sparkling tries to defeat the home side, but Westville’s rugby teams, much as their hockey sides had done, rose to the challenge, especially in the younger age groups.
The Griffins’ under-16 and under-15 sides recorded clean sweeps. Incredibly, when the schools met at DHS, the Horseflies swept the under-15 games. Quite the reversal!
And speaking of astounding reversals, Westville’s 2nd XV, which had lost by 30 points at DHS in April, came away with an inspiring one-point win on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the DHS under-14 A team, which has enjoyed a superb season, added another win to its list of fine results.

Hockey
Westville’s win over DHS in the meeting of the two 1st XIs on Friday was an unexpected but thrilling performance. It uplifted a challenging season for the Griffins, which had been blighted by numerous injuries.
The tone had been set earlier in the day by the school’s under-14 A and under-16 A sides which, up against very good DHS teams, showed their Old Boys what they are capable of at their best.

Unfortunately, Eskom affected the broadcast of the 1st XI match, but we caught a couple of highlights from the sidelines. They’re included in the report on the game, along with comments from Westville Director of Hockey, Cam Mackay.
