College’s Van Zyl, Westville’s Pillay in SA u19 team

Johnathan van Zyl, who captained the Maritzburg College 1st XI in 2022, and Romashan Pillay, Westville’s current captain, have been named in the 15-player South Africa under-19 squad to tour Bangladesh from 3-18 July.

The team, which will play five 50-over matches against their Bangladeshi counterparts, was announced after a four-day selection camp held at the Centre of Excellence in Pretoria last week.

In March, Cricket South Africa announced a 27-player SA under-19 squad which, apart from Van Zyl and Pillay, also included Saint Charles College’s Ntandoyenkosi Zuma and Nqobani Mokoena of Northwood. Zuma has been named a non-travelling reserve.

“A great blend of players”

The SA under-19 Convenor of Selectors, Patrick Moroney, commented: “We’re excited by the quality of players emerging from our youth pipeline and we have identified a great blend of players for this tour to Bangladesh, with two of them (Liam Alder and Kwena Maphaka) bringing international experience after playing in last year’s Under-19 World Cup in the West Indies.

“While this tour will give us a good idea of the character of the players, it will also give the players an opportunity to put their skills to the test in similar playing conditions to those of next year’s World Cup in Sri Lanka.”

The South Africa under-19 team also has a new Head Coach, with Mailbongwe Maketa taking over the reins from Shukri Conrad.
