Second half blitz takes KES to win over Westville

20 May 2023

Westville’s midseason dip in form continued when they were well beaten 33-14 by KES up on the Highveld on Saturday. (Video highlights below)

Westville scored first and looked promising in the first quarter, but KES hit back with tries just before halftime as the visitors lost concentration. Westville had a good opportunity to add points when they had a post-hooter penalty, but it was missed, and they were 14-7 down at the break.

KES in control

A 14-point blitz by the home team just after halftime put them firmly in control.

There would be a second try by Westville to threaten a comeback, but KES finished strongly for a five tries to two victory.

Disappointed

Westville coach Jabz Zulu was a disappointed man.

“We started well. We were good for 20 minutes, but then came some inconsistency. I think the teams were well-matched. KES hung in and cashed in when we had some soft moments. That was the difference.”

Reunion

Westville’s attention moves to Clifton and their Old Boys’ Reunion this coming week, and then there is a big rematch against DHS. Earlier this season, in Durban, the Horseflies ran out 24-20 winners.

Zulu said he is displeased with how the season is panning out.

“We started the season well, but the last couple of weeks have not been so good. We were bullied by Jeppe, Maritzburg College then dominated us at the collisions. In this game against KES, I thought I had my team back…we were fighting hard, but mistakes like miskicks hurt us.”
