One of the biggest fixtures in South African schoolboy sport took place over two days in Pretoria on the weekend when around 750 Maritzburg College boys made the trip up to the South African capital city for the school’s annual derby against Pretoria Boys’ High.
A total of 28 rugby matches and 15 hockey matches were played, while the schools also did battle in, among others, chess, mountain biking, table tennis and squash. Huge respect to the staff who organised the trip. That is some logistical accomplishment! And props to the boys who, despite playing away from home, produced excellent results.
Rugby
On the rugby fields, Maritzburg College ruled. What a day for the red, black and white, who ran up a sterling record of 25 wins and only three losses. And, to crown it all, the 1st XV turned on the style to run out handsome 47-15 winners on Brook Field.
Alongside the field, the College boys also did themselves proud with an outstanding job of support for the 1st XV who were without their captain, Sasha Kadira. He was still on the mend from an ankle injury he suffered in a 26-20 win over Jeppe, but he appreciated his team-mates’ winning performance.
“It was very, very cool, and I am so proud of the boys for their efforts,” Kadira, who is also College’s Head Boy, told Pinnacle Schools. “It is always tough not playing, but I was proud that even without three of us they still produced a result like that.”

Hockey
While Maritzburg College dominated the rugby fixtures, it was extremely tight in the hockey games.
In five open age group matches, there were draws from the 1st team to the 4th team, with College edging the 5th team game 1-0. It took a stunning late goal from Banele Dlamini to earn College a deserved share of the spoils in the 1st team clash.
Maritzburg’s under-16 A team continued their impressive season with a 2-0 victory, and the under-14A side registered a narrow 1-0 win.
