Dloti Quad unveiling, March 2023.

28 March 2023

In 2017, Michaelhouse suffered a tragic loss when a tyre blowout on Town Hill caused a bus to flip, resulting in the death of grade 10 learner Themba Dloti. Last week, the school ensured his name will never be forgotten by naming its newest quod in his honour.

The shocking incident occurred when four football teams were on their way to Kearsney College. It led to 13 pupils and a teacher requiring surgery. But the passing of Themba Dloti was irreversible, sending the Michaelhouse community into mourning for the popular learner.

His father described him as “great‚ cheerful‚ loving and caring” in an interview with The Sunday Times.

Support from around South Africa

Around South Africa, many schools, stunned by the news, offered their support to the Michaelhouse community.

The Dloti family was present for the unveiling of the memorial plaque near the steps of the Quad, on the approach from Baines House.

Chairman of the Board Andrew Schaefer made an address, with the Dloti family then replying.

Themba’s father, Thabo, was formerly the Group Chief Executive of the Liberty Holdings Group, and a member of the Michaelhouse Board of Governors. He is now Chairman of the Board of Sithega Investments, a company he co-founded.
