HOCKEY

Westville Boys’ High’s hockey teams were in imperious form against Glenwood High in their first winter derby day a week earlier, winning comfortably up and down the age groups, but they found Northwood to be more challenging opponents in contests played over the course of two days.

In the five open age group matches, there was never more than a goal in it, and two ended in draws, including the 1st team game.

The Griffin and the Knights had to settle for a share of the spoils in the showdown between the two first teams, under lights on Friday night.

At under-16 level, Northwood came out on top in the A and B clashes, but Westville came back with three wins and a draw in the remaining fixtures.

Northwood’s under-14 A team has been touted as a particularly strong unit, and they delivered with a win, this time over Westville, but the Griffin’s under-14 B team were convincing winners. Northwood, though, returned the favour in the remaining matches in the age group.

RUGBY

Westville and Northwood were, undoubtedly, two of the best all-round sports' schools of 2022, but both felt their rugby results were a little inconsistent, so there was plenty on the line as they went in search of their first wins of 2023 on Saturday in Durban.

On Reece-Edwards Field, the Northwood and Westville 1st XVs engaged in a tight battle, with both teams seeking their opening wins of the season after going down to Hilton College and Glenwood respectively in their first outings the previous week.

In the end, there was only one point in it in a contest that produced 45 points, with the Griffin securing victory.

Westville performed strongly in the under-16 age group matches, coming out of them with a clean record. They also took a win in the under-15 A game, but Northwood were convincing winners in the remainder of the games in that age group.

And while Westville made it a clean sweep of wins in the A team matches, with a one-point victory in the under-14 A game, it was Northwood who were victorious in the other four matches.
