Prospective boarders thrilled by the Northwood experience

20 March 2023

Saturday was not only a big day for Northwood as they hosted Hilton College for the first winter derby day of 2023. It was also a memorable occasion for a group of prospective boarders who were able to share in the Northwood experience over the weekend. At that age, among “the big boys”, it’s an occurrence that one doesn’t forget.

The boys spent Friday evening meeting and making friends with the current grade 8 boarders, the newest group living life on the Northwood campus. They also joined them for some fun and games out on the fields, which included the novel experience of playing bubble soccer.

Their parents, meanwhile, were given the chance to meet the school’s staff in casual circumstances at a welcome braai. The boys, then, joined them for a hearty meal.

On Saturday, the prospective Squires were taken on various tours around the school after an early breakfast, which opened their eyes to the wide array of options open to them. Not many had expected lawn bowls to be one of them!

The highlight of the weekend, undoubtedly, was experiencing a whole-hearted derby day as two of KwaZulu-Natal’s leading school sporting powers went at it hammer and tongs in hockey and rugby.

The atmosphere on these occasions, especially during the 1st XV rugby matches, is seldom rivalled elsewhere. And with the waters of the Indian Ocean forming a beautiful blue backdrop it created an enduring memory and a thrilling experience for the boys. No doubt, some of them will be calling Northwood home next year.
