HOCKEY

On a day in which Clifton shaded Kearsney overall on the hockey front, it was, nonetheless, Kearsney that grabbed a 1-0 victory in the 1st XI game.

In a very tight contest in which most of the play was kept outside of the two 23-metre areas, it was the home side that found the decisive breakthrough in the second half from a penalty corner variation.

The under-16A match failed to produce a goal, but Clifton ran out 2-0 winners in the meeting of the two under-14 sides.

RUGBY

On Stott Field, Kearsney downed Clifton 19-0 in a stop-start affair that was affected by numerous resets at scrum time, early season handling errors, and a little too much needless niggle, which was, frankly speaking, harmless, but lasted the entire match and distracted the players from focussing on their own games.

As is the way with rugby, however, the niggle evaporated when the final whistle sounded, and the teams warmly embraced.

The Kearsney 1st XV was full value for its win, thanks to feisty teamwork on the defensive end, and a number of decisive thrusts on the offensive front. Clifton came ever so close to making it over the Kearsney try-line, but twice spilled the ball within a metre of it.

There was a great tussle between the under-15 A teams, with Kearsney picking up a four-point win in the end, but elsewhere, in the main age group games, it was a comfortable day for the boys in maroon.

Clifton, though, enjoyed a number of successes, with their under-15C, under-14C and under-14D teams all recording impressive victories. Overall, however, Kearsney ruled the rugby fields.
