Michaelhouse 27-20 Maritzburg College, Meadows, Balgowan, 18 March 2023.

19 March 2023

A huge programme of hockey and rugby fixtures were hosted by Michaelhouse at Balgowan on Saturday, 18 March, with Maritzburg College making the trip up from the KwaZulu-Natal capital for the first big winter derby of the season.

Up and down the long list of matches, an excellent battle unfolded, with Michaelhouse sneaking wins in the big 1st XI and 1st XV games, and College coming away with the advantage in victories.

HOCKEY

On Aitken’s Astro, Michaelhouse edged a five-goal thriller against a College team that had looked more complete the previous weekend in pre-season action in hot and humid conditions in Durban.

‘House, though, had ironed out their issues in front of goal and found the back of the net three times. They were left to savour a precious victory over the Red Army, which always presents a formidable challenge.

Right throughout the age groups, results were, excitingly, very unpredictable, with the two schools very evenly matched.

RUGBY

On Meadows, the Michaelhouse and Maritzburg College 1st teams duelled it out in a cut-and-thrust contest, with the College forwards producing a strong showing up front, while the Michaelhouse backs held the edge on the day. It was 15-14 to College at the break, but Michaelhouse had fought back from 0-15 down.

After the resumption, they outscored the visitors by eight points in the second half, with the winning try and conversion coming two minutes from time, to come away with their first win of the season following a 24-24 draw with Helpmekaar a week earlier.

The open age group results went the way of Michaelhouse by four wins to three. College enjoyed the edge in the other age groups, but were unable to sweep any of them, with Michaelhouse scoring a narrow three-point victory in the under-16A game.

College won by just two points in the under-15A clash, but were more convincing winners, by 19 points, in the under-14A match.
