Westville Boys’ High and Durban High School were the class of the fields in the Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies) Gala, contested in Pretoria, and the Alan Burt Gala, swum in Johannesburg, up against a mix of top schools from KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, on the weekend.
Westville, long the standard-setter in KZN, and arguably the most outstanding swimming school in South Africa, was the convincing winners of both galas, while the continuing rise of DHS was on view for all to see as the Durbanites finished runner-up on both occasions.
In the Affies Gala, Westville, with a total of 414 points, ended with a comfortable 73-point advantage over DHS, who did superbly to hold off the always strong Grey College, 341 points to 328. Saint Benedict’s were only just behind Grey, on 321 points, with the hosts, Affies, in fifth on 270.
Following next were Pretoria Boys’ High, Kearsney College, Maritzburg College and Saint David’s.
Westville and DHS far ahead
At Saint Stithians, where Saint David’s served as hosts of the Alan Burt Gala, Westville finished exactly 100 points clear of DHS, 582 to 482. DHS, in turn, were 110 points clear of the next team in the standings. It was tight for third place, with Saint David’s finishing with 372 points, Pretoria Boys’ High with 364, and Saint Stithians with 354.
Behind them, the order was KES, Maritzburg College, Kearsney College, Glenwood and Parktown.
A superb start to the season, with exceptional showings from Westville and DHS especially.
