A post on the Durban High School Facebook page this week has revealed that the school’s astro project is nearing completion. It’s been a long time coming, but the end line is in sight, much to the delight of the DHS community.
This year, DHS will play host to hockey fixtures on their home grounds for the first time in the school’s illustrious 157-year history.
Messages of encouragement
Many messages of encouragement welcomed the news and photo of an almost ready to go turf, including from Westville Boys’ High, which congratulated DHS on the school’s venture, saying: “Awesome guys! Exciting to see world-class sporting facilities adding value to schools, learners and the broader Durban community!”
DHS hockey is on a rapid upwards trajectory, with a record 36 boys being selected for KZN Coastal hockey teams in 2022.
Much of that success has stemmed from the leadership of the Director of Hockey, Michael Baker, who was also coach of the KZN Coastal under-18A team. With Baker leading the way, other DHS coaches have also been making their marks, with five of them serving as KZN reps last year.
Now, the imminent opening of the home ground astro is set to deliver another huge boost to DHS hockey. The timing could hardly be better, with the season approaching, and it is going to be an exciting to see what the immediate impact is going to be on DHS hockey in 2023 and beyond.
